“In working one on one,the presence-as-witness gave the space for deep inner access. Likewise, Martha's articulation of what she observed lent depth to the integration of my experience.”

Authentic Movement for Individuals and Groups

We utilize innovative approaches, including dance/movement and visual art, to help individuals and groups fine-tune communication skills and gain insight. One approach is called Authentic Movement. It is a structured form of movement that involves two roles:

MOVER: The mover simply notices and follows whatever impulses arise in his or her body to move or be still.

WITNESS: At the same time, the witness, sitting on the periphery of the space, watches the mover with careful, compassionate and precise attention.

As Authentic Movement facilitators, we customize individual and group sessions, coaching, facilitating and using other body work methods where appropriate. Drawing on over 30 years of training in these fields, we use exercises, activities and discussions to tailor the sessions to specific needs. We help participants, as individuals or in groups, learn from both moving and witnessing, and from others’ experiences as well.

Authentic Movement Series: Consultant as Witness

We have also created a series called “Presence and Attention at Work.” Using the role of “witness” as a starting place, we teach an approach to listening and paying attention to enhance impact as a leader, consultant, social worker and therapist.

As a nonverbal practice, Authentic Movement leads us to both broaden and focus our attention. It fosters a sharpened sense of the different perspectives we can use to observe and understand what we see. . It expands our choices for being present by enabling us to discover and deepen our own modes of expression. Authentic Movement stimulates increased self-awareness for both mover and witness.

The outcomes of the series are as follows:

  • Participants will learn to be present, confident and undistracted in the moment and learn to center themselves in difficult situations or with difficult clients or employees.
  • Participants will recognize the increased opportunities to build trust and connect with clients and employees at a deeper level, when taking a witnessing stance.
  • Participants will become more aware of their own judgments and projections and will refine their ability to communicate with care and clear boundaries simultaneously.
  • Participants will expand their capacity to listen, to see and to tune into the diverse needs of their clients and employees.
